Van de Ven Double Ends The Toffees' Run at Brand New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
