Olympians Call on Iranian Authorities to Halt Death Sentence of Champion Boxer

Over 20 Olympic medallists, mentors and other world-class competitors have put their names to a statement calling for a end to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's escalating use of executions as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed letter condemns the government's ruling to confirm the death sentence of the athlete.

The boxer, 30, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was detained for participating in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and charged of aiding an opposition group. He has spent 60 months in prison, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.

“Sport is meant to promote hope, solidarity, and fortitude,” the endorsers expressed. “The capital punishment of a champion for his political views is a direct assault on these values and a warning to every athlete who attempts to voice opinions.

Record of Executing Sports Figures

The letter noted that the athlete's situation was not unique and emphasized Iran’s past of executing competitors for their views, including Habib Khabiri, captain of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the female volleyball side. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national wrestling champion, was also executed.
