A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.
